Container Demurrage and Detention are charges by shipping line company (container owner) against compensate for their lost the opportunity to use their containers. Normally, shipping line companies will give free time for container demurrage and detention. There are 2 kinds of providing free time as following.
“Free time Demurrage” counts from date of container arrival Thai port till date of haulage container from Thai port.
Normally shipping lines gives free time 5 working days for demurrage (or clients request and shipping lines agreed), Shipping lines will charge demurrage if Shipment haulage from Thai port over free time agreed.
“Free time Detention” counts from date of haulage container from Thai port till date of return empty container to container yard.
Normally Shipping lines gives free time 3 working days for detention (or clients request and shipping lines agreed), shipping lines will charge detention if return containers over free time.
“Free time Demurrage and Detention” count from date of container arrival Thai port till date of return empty container to container yard.
Normally shipping lines give 7 to 14 days free time, but we need at least 7 working days free time to process documents and transportation till return empty container to container yard.
The appropriate free time of container demurrage and detention provided by shipping line company will avoid your extra cost. There are factors that you should concern as following
- Distance : The distance will effect directly to transit time. Normally, one round trip will take time at least 3 working days.
- Holiday : Thai and Lao customs will be closed on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays
- Quantity of Container : If having a huge number of container in one shipment, it is impossible to haulage container in a few days. Furthermore, Unloading capacity in Laos cannot be supported.
